Corx Heads East

Corx debuted in Japan with window and shop displays at flagship Paul Smith stores in the major cities from 15 April. At Shibuya, Shibuya MauriWC2, Shinjuku Mauri Men, Shinjuku Isetan, Yokohama Sogo NH and Ikebukuro Seibu in the Tokyo area and in the Osaka area at Umeda Daimaru CG, Umeda Hankyu FS, Kobe, Kyoto and Fukuoka. There are also press reports in Vita, Mono, Cool Trans & Snoozer.

Although Corx is thought of as a traditional game we wanted it to be thoroughly modern in design and so much of our opinion about what is cool in games comes from the East with computer games: Sony, Nintendo and Tamagochi.

Corx is a return to the basics of hand eye co-ordination, but we didn't want to be just a traditional style game.

Aesthetically, we wanted to give the game an East meets West style. We wanted a design that would appeal to adults and kids alike. We partly designed the look of Corx with Japan in mind. With Corx having elements of a mini martial art - poise, balance, concentration, intuition and with the competitive gambling angle, we felt that it would really appeal to the Japanese market. So, getting Pete Fowler involved with the artwork was a stroke of good fortune. Pete is obsessed with Japanese culture and developed the Corx Boy and Corx Girl characters with a strong Eastern flavour. Pete's career has recently taken off in Japan - he has recently designed a range of toys for Sony and a clothing range for Satan Arbeit.

At an exhibition of new products in May 2001 a group of women, consisting of one Western and two Japanese, approached our stand. They were from a company called Itochu. When we remarked that we'd never heard of them they replied that "people often say that, but we are one of the biggest multinationals in the world". That certainly shut us up!

The 'Western Woman' - Claire Irvine - has been relocated to Tokyo by Itochu, taught to speak Japanese and placed at VCJ, one of Itochu's companies with the task of bringing Corx to the Japanese market.

Claire has already been offered a guest spot on Asahi TV in Japan to explain Corx. She's incredibly nervous at not only playing Corx in front of the camera, but having to explain the game in Japanese. Her fear is that she'll freeze and won't be able to get Corx to stand! The prospect of doing a Corx 'flop' on live television is giving her sleepless nights!

As a Western woman in Japan selling a UK product with a strong Japanese styling Claire is something of a curiosity (in a nice way) to many people and has agreed to keep us updated on her adventures. Last week she played Corx with a Samurai sword master!
